1966 Chevrolet Chevelle SS

Overview

Recently spent an afternoon at a local car show in Plain City, Ohio when I spotted this 66 396 SS Chevelle parked by the old elementary school. I really liked the black on black and thought it would be a great car to get some pictures of. I spoke for a few minutes with the owner and he was kind enough to let me take some pictures of it before he moved the car. I wish I would have spent more time and gotten some more shots of it.

SS 396 Chevelle Quick Notes

In 1966 Chevrolet went after the muscle car market with the SS 396 Chevelle. The SS sported dual simulated scoops as well as a new grille and bumper, chrome accents and SS signature badges. The SS was delivered with a deluxe vinyl interior as standard. The Super Sport 396 included as standard a 325hp 396 V8. However, you could order a 360hp 396 if you wanted as well as 375hp L78 396.

The SS 396 Chevelle was delivered with a 3 speed manual , a close- or wide-ratio four speed manual or a Powerglide automatic transmission in 1966. The four speed cars are more desirable than the 3 speed or automatic cars. The L78 was only available with a heavy duty four speed transmission.

The vinyl interior came in several color choices: bright blue, blue, red, black, bronze, white, fawn or turquoise. The bench seat was standard for SS 396. However, you could order bucket seats as an option. Chevrolet also gave you an option of ordering a center console and floorshift with the SS 396.

The SS 396 had multiple exterior colors available ranging from Tuxedo Black to Marina Blue. The 66 SS 396 Chevelle is not a car that is in limited supply. There are many on the market. Chevrolet produced a total of 72,272 SS 396s in 1966. Just over 5,000 of those are convertiables. As you can see there are many of these cars available on the market today. Today, SS 396s range in prices from $20,000 on the lowside to as high as $70,000 maybe more. I was researched some of the recent auctions at Barrett-Jackson for 66 396 super sports and the average price is around $45,000. There were a few cars that were in the 60,000 to 70,000 range. The average selling price though was in the mid $40s for a very nice car.
